Hello families! I am so excited to be starting my 1st year here at Gray Hawk Elementary School!
Many people ask, “What does an elementary school counselor do?” I will put it simply.
I am here for your child/children at school to help them be their best learner!
"Elementary school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self-management, and social skills. School counselors understand and promote success for today’s diverse students. They implement a comprehensive school-counseling program to support students through this important developmental period.” –American School Counseling Association. ASCA.
What do I offer for your children at school? I offer direct and indirect student services including:
- School counseling core curriculum- once a week your child will participate in whole class instruction.
- Individual counseling; provide planned, short term and goal focused counseling. (as needed by parent/teacher request and by parent permission only) School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools.
- Small group counseling; organized short-term groups promoting social/emotional development (as needed basis by parent/teacher request and by parent permission only).
- Crisis response- Provide support and assistance to students and families as they navigate crisis and emergency situations.
- Collaboration- Work with educators, parents, and the community to support student achievement.
What does it take to be a school counselor?
“Elementary school counselors hold a master’s degree and require state certification in school counseling. Maintaining certification includes ongoing professional development to stay current with education reform and challenges facing today’s students. Professional association membership enhances the school counselor’s knowledge and effectiveness.” -ASCA
