Welcome to Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers

Q: What is Parents As Teachers (PAT)?
A: Parents As Teachers is a program with parent educators certified in child development who help parents be their child's first and best teacher. They help parents increase parenting confidence and competence. They strive to meet individual needs and accommodate your child's development and help resolve concerns.

Q: What does the Parents As Teachers program include?
A: Personalized visits to help you learn about child development, how your child's brain is developing, talk about concerns, ask questions, and share the joys and frustrations of parenting.
Play groups where children can learn to play with others and try new activities, and parents can meet and share experiences.
Regular developmental screenings to reassure you of your child's progress and to help identify potential problems.
A resources network that can help parents find services in their community, if needed, beyond what PAT can do.

Q: What research supports Parents As Teachers?
A: Parents As Teachers children, at age three, were significantly more advanced in language, social development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than comparison children. The children also outscored their peers on measures of school readiness and later school achievement and they less frequently placed in special education. Lastly, parents took a more active role in their children's schooling than non-PAT parents.
